LOS MOCHIS

Founded by Americans...

Los Mochis dates back to the end of the 19th century, when American Albert K. Owen attempted to create an American colony there. It is now the 3rd most important city in the state and is the origination point on the tourist route along the Chihuahua-Pacific railroad.

The first name for the city was American chosen as "Plat" but it was later changed to Los Mochis. Farming and production of Garbanzo beans, rice, sorghum, soy, wheat and sugar cane all take place in the fertile El Fuerte valley that surrounds it.

Because it was founded by Americans, the layout of the city is very different than most Mexican towns. The streets are very wide and tree-lined and are oriented toward the four cardinal points and interconnect by ring roads.
